The Student Experience
Students participate in monthly resiliency education interventions. Each time students meet with the HEART Project they participate in a series of activities that include:
- Introduction to a new/unique food and nutrition education
- Read-Aloud of a picture book relating to well-being and resiliency
- Mindfulness Minute- teaching and practice of breathing techniques
- Culturally - relevant and creative art project
Mindfulness Minute
Students are introduced to new breathing routines each month and reminded of the opportunities that they have to use the breathing routines throughout their day.
""I take a deep breath in class when the work is really hard, and then I can do it!"
Nutrition
Health and nutritional education are provided each month. Students learn about healthy food choices, vitamins and minerals, Native foods, and how the body works! Students are provided a snack each month that coincides with the nutritional education focus for the month.
"I love trying new foods that we don't have at our grocery store!
Read Aloud
Culturally conscious stories help students to learn about how they can be resilient, persevere, challenge themselves, and set goals.
" I like the story about the wolves, it reminds me that I am in control."
Art
Art is the main focus of our time with students each month.Projects are carefully selected to build upon the community values that the school, community, and Tribal Elders want at the center of their teachings.
"We get to be creative when we go to The Heart Project. I wish we could do this every week!"
